Message from the SHRMSTL Board on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB)

Posted on 09/06/2024 12:00 am  /   September 2024

Dear Chapter Members,

You may be aware of recent developments related to the frameworks for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) in the workplace. Johnny C. Taylor Jr., President and CEO of SHRM National, has recently discussed transitioning from the DEIB model to a focus on Inclusion and Diversity (ID). This change was suggested after SHRM conducted a member feedback session and in reviewing data.

Highlights of Taylor’s Message:

  1. Streamlined Focus: Taylor suggests that focusing on Inclusion and Diversity (ID) rather than the broader DEIB framework might help organizations streamline their efforts and better integrate these principles into their overall strategies.
  2. Integration with Organizational Objectives: The proposed ID framework emphasizes the importance of embedding inclusion and diversity into all aspects of organizational operations and strategic planning.
  3. Potential Impact: The shift aims to simplify and enhance the implementation of inclusion and diversity initiatives, making them more actionable and measurable.

What This Means for You:

  • Exploring Options: As this discussion unfolds, it is an opportunity for organizations to consider whether or not shifting from DEIB to ID might align with their current DEIB efforts and objectives.
  • Ongoing Conversations: We encourage open dialogue and exchange of ideas on this topic. Understanding different perspectives can provide valuable insights into how best to move forward. We also recognize that an opportunity to share your voice on this matter is important. Over the next few weeks, we will ask our members to complete a survey to hear your unique perspectives and how this shift might impact your organization. We plan to share this survey data with SHRM National in an effort for a greater understanding of the impact.
  • Resources and Support: We are here to support you as you navigate these potential changes. A large aspect of the work we do as HR professionals is around change management within our organizations. While this shift may or may not align with your views of how this important work is embedded within your organization, we are here to provide tools to support whatever path you take. Look for future events on this topic.

We believe it is important for our members to stay informed about evolving trends and frameworks in the field of HR. We will continue to provide updates and resources as this discussion progresses.

Thank you for your passion, dedication, and support in fostering inclusive workplaces.

Sincerely,
Your SHRM-STL Board
